1. 1ST NICHOLAS1 FAIRLAMB was born 1678 in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham
County, England, and died 1722 in Chester Co.(Del Co)Pa.. He married
KATHARINE CROSBY 1703 in Chester Co.(Del Co), daughter of RICHARD
CROSBY and ELLINOR DONE. She was born 19 October 1675 in England,
and died Abt. 1755 in Chester Co.(Del Co) Pa.
Notes for 1ST NICHOLAS FAIRLAMB:
Man named Norris foreclosed on a mortgage that he had granted in
1716 to Nicholas Fairlamb on a house, known as "Ship Tavern"
in the borough of Chester. [From page on Internet discovered when
searching under Fairlamb name. Lost source on net and couldn't recapture
it] Ed
Nicholas Fairlamb came to America 6/13/1700 from Stockton-on-Tees,
Durham, England, bringing with him a certificate from the Monthly
Meeting at Stockton dated 6/13/1700. He left England from the port
of Whitby.(per John Fairlamb who lived in England) Nothing has been
found on his parentage. He settled first in Philadelphia, where
the Minutes of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, dated 9mo. 29,
1700, record that "Nicholas Fairlamb's certificate from Stockton
in the Bishoprick of Durham was read and approved." The certificate
stated that" Nicholas Fairlamb Hath lived and belonged to our
meeting the time of his apprenticeship and since he hath been loose
from his Mr. being seaven years hath behaved himselfe orderly and
honestly."
[I, Ethel Dougherty, have written to the Monthly Meeting in England
but they found no more information on Nicholas.]
The minutes of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, dated 6/27/1703
state "Nicholas Fairlamb intimating his Intention of marriage
with a young woman in Chester County (Now Delaware County), desired
a Certificate from hence to the monthly meeting where she belongs."
After which he removed to Middletown, Pa. This marriage between
Nicholas and Katharine Crosby was proposed in the Chester Monthly
Meeting for the second time on 8mo. 25, 1703 and must have taken
place soon after that date, Katharine's father Richard came from
London or Sussex as early as the first visit of the proprietor,
William Penn, in 1682. Part of his lands were located in Middletown,
but he resided near Chester. (Ridley Township)
Later Nicholas and Katharine lived in Chester, where for several
years he was clerk of the Monthly Meeting and an overseer of the
Chester Meeting. Katharine succeeded Hannah Sharples as one of the
overseers 6 Month 25,1707.
On March 1, 1711 Richard Crosby of Ridley, Yeoman, and his wife
Eleanor, and Nicholas Fairlamb of Chester, merchant and his wife
Katharine, conveyed to William Pennell 270 acres of land in Middletown,
which Richard had given, but not conveyed to Nicholas and his wife.
On March 25,1712 Caleb Pusey and Henry Worley conveyed to Nicholas
Fairlamb, John Sharpless, John Smith, Thomas Vernon, James Lownes
and Joseph Vernon a lot of 103 perches (a perch is 16 1/2 feet)
by 1-4 feet in Chester for the use of the Meeting.
Nicholas served also as a member of the Assembly from Chester County
from 1704 to 1706 and from 1711 to 1714. He became Justice of the
Peace in Chester County, May 30, 1715; Associate Judge of the Court
in 1715; and Sheriff of the county 1717 to1719. In Early times the
office of sheriff was not so profitable as later, and as a sort
of perquisite, the sheriff was allowed to keep tavern. Hence, we
find Nicholas Fairlamb, a newly elected sheriff, petitioning to
the court to be recommended for a license. In later times the tavern
was kept in the dwelling apartment of the prison.
The will of Nicholas Fairlamb was probated October 22, 1722 (Chester
County Wills). His wife Katharine was administrator. No record of
where he is buried has yet been found.
Note: In 1751 a parliamentary act corrected the calendar Sept 2,
1751 was to be followed by Thursday, Sept 14, 1751. January should
be the first month instead of March, as they computed since 1682.

Dear Mrs. Dougherty, thank you for your e-mail regarding our possible
common ancestors. You said that a Nicholas Fairlamb came from Durham
in 1700 , I have another letter from a Clinton Fairlamb Nieweg of
Glenside, PA 19038 who also stated that his ancestor Nicholas Fairlamb
left Stockton -on -Tees, County Durham in 1700. This is probably
the same man, but as I am from that area myself ,I must point out
that there are two separate cities, Stockton -on-Tees and Durham
both in the County of Durham. So I would say that probably Stockton
is the correct home of Nicholas. I have also read somewhere that
this same Nicholas left for America from the port of Whitby which
is not too far from Stockton but obviously on the coast in the county
of North Yorkshire.
You said that you thought that Durham was close to Wales, in your
terms it is as it is only about 300 miles , possibly less, from
County Durham to South Wales, but in the UK that is a long way because
of the degree of difficulty in travelling that distance. Please
note that it is always referred to as ' County Durham ' to distinguish
it from the city of Durham, and on the postal address it is written
as Co. Durham.
You might also like to know that there is a large concentration
of Fairlambs in the town of Allendale which is the most southerly
town in the county of Northumberland right on the border with County
Durham. I come from the most northerly town in Northumberland ,
Berwick on Tweed ,and this is also the most northerly town in England
, right on the border with Scotland. I have visited Allendale several
times even though it is way off the beaten track and anybody that
is anybody in that small town is called Fairlamb.
I have also had a couple of e-mails from a Fairlamb in Denver ,Colorado
and I know that he has travelled over the Atlantic to meet with
my cousin Richard in Wales. I don't have his e-mail address but
if you want I can get it from my cousin. I hope this has proved
of interest to you .
Best regards, John.
From Mo. Mtg. at Stockton, Co. of Durham, England 13 Jun 1700 "hath
lived and belonged to our meetting the time of his Aprentisship
and Since he hath been loose from his Mr: being seaven years hath
behaved himselfe orderly and honestly." Received 9 mo. 29,
1700 per Internet & family tree of Joseph Henry Fairlamb.

3. JOHN2 FAIRLAMB I (NICHOLAS1) was born 3 November 1713, and died
6 February 1766. He married SUSANNA ENGLE 13 November 1742, daughter
of FREDERICK ENGLE and ANNA CLOUD. She was born 1724, and died 1793.
Notes for JOHN FAIRLAMB I:
John Fairlamb evidently lived most of his life in Middletown,Chester
County [later Delaware Co], Pa. In 1752 he served as Commissioner
of Chester County his duties similar to justices, grand jury and
assessors. Commissioners were required to issue precepts to the
constable, requiring them to make returns to the assessors of the
names and estates of the inhabitants and the assessors were required
to lay the rates herein. From 1755-58 and again from 1762-63, he
served as Sheriff. In 1761 and 1764 he was the Justice of the Peace.
He was also one of about eight from Chester County serving as a
member of the assembly in 1764 and 1765. In Chester County Rates
of 1765, he was listed as owning 350 acres, six horses, ten cattle
and fifteen sheep.
As assessor, John Fairlamb signed the following document: "We
the Subscribers and Each of us do Solemnly, Sincerely and Truly,
Declare and Affirm that we will, Well and Truly Cause the County
Debts to be speedily Adjusted and the Rates and Sums of Money by
Virtue of the Said Acts Imposed, to be duly and Equally assessed
and Laid According to the best of our Skill and Knowledge and herein
we will Spare no person for favour or affection Nor Grieve any for
hatred or Ill will, As Witness our Hands the Twenty-Seventh day
of November, Anno Dom. 1750."
After John Fairlamb's death in 1766, his widow married Robert Pennell,
son of William amd Mary Pennell, 11-9-1769. Susanna died in 1793.
John was buried in Friend's Cemetery, Edgmont Avenue, Chester, Del.
Co. Pa. Graves later moved to Friends Cemetery, 24th & Providence
in Chester in a mass grave, no markers remaining, to make room for
stores, which became a waste, not only to disturb the graves, but
in moving them the list of graves was lost. Had not been found in
2002. Later Chester became run down and stores were closed, etc.

9. NICHOLAS II3 FAIRLAMB (JOHN2, NICHOLAS1) was born 28 August 1743
in Middletown, Pa., USA, and died 3 January 1816. He married HANNAH
PRESTON 31 March 1768, daughter of JONAS PRESTON and JANE PAXSON.
She was born 22 October 1747, and died 23 November 1815 in Chester
Co.
Notes for NICHOLAS II FAIRLAMB:
Nicholas spent his whole life in Chester County. In 1769 a group
interested in establishing a library met and formed themselves into
a company. In 1770 the library opened with Nicholas as one of the
five directors. That same year according to the Chester County Rates,
Nicholas owned 200 acres, 3 horses, 4 cattle and 11 sheep.
At a meeting held December 20,1774 at the Court Hose in Chester
County, Nicholas and Samuel Fairlamb were selected to be on a committee
of sixty-nine member "to carry into execution the association
of the Continental Congress". They were authorized to "continue
until one month after the adjournment of the next Continental Congress
and to transmit such business and to enter into such associates
as to them might appear expedient."
The assembly, on June 30, 1775, appointed a committee of safety,
of which there were five members from Chester County. Benjamin Franklin
was made President. In October the committee was reorganized, and
Nicholas Fairlamb was added to their number. "There were a
considerable number of Quakers who openly advocated a resort to
arms." Even within the limits of this little county, one hundred
and ten men were disowned by the society for having entered the
service of their county." Nicholas and Samuel were complained
of for joining combatants, resisting Civil Government, Both inconsistent
with the principles of the meeting, and were disowned in 1775, as
was their brother Frederick Fairlamb.
On May 17, 1777 Nicholas Fairlamb was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel
in the Sixth Battalion of the Chester County Militia. He served
on Anthony Wayne's staff and assisted in the capture of Stoney Point;
in his Quaker garb he rode through British line to Harrisburg and
received arms and association, which he covered with hay and took
back to his company in Chester.
After the war, Nichlas served as Sheriff from 1789 to 1796, and
in 1798 he was made Justice of the Peace for Middletown.

Pa., USA, daughter of ROBERT PENNELL and HANNAH CHAMBERLAIN. She
was born 12 January 1747/48 in Middletown, Pa.USA, and died 20 November
1818 in Middletown, Pa.USA.
Notes for FREDERICK FAIRLAMB:
Frederick was by trade a shoemaker but employed journeymen and did
little himself. Tradition says that his home was made from bricks
brought from England. Chester County rates of 1769 list him (Tanyard)
180 acres, 2 horses and 3 cattle.
From Pennsylvania Revolutionary Quaker Patriots of Delaware County,
formerly Chester County, compiled by Anne Irving Trainor; "There
were a considerable number of Quakers who openly advocated resort
to arms. Even within the limits of this little county, one hundred
and ten were disowned by the society, for having entered the service
of their country." The records of Chester and Concord Monthly
Meetings 1774-1785 contain the names of members who were disowned
for military service. "Nicholas and Samuel Fairlamb and others
were complained of for joining combatants, resisting Civil Government,
inconsistent" with the principles of the Meeting, and exercising
in military services. They were disowned in 1775 as was Frederick
Fairlamb of Middletown.
Frederick Fairlamb was a Private in the Middletown Company of the
7th Battalion, Chester county, 1780-82.
The 1790 census of Pennsylvania lists Frederick Fairlamb as having
in his household 3 males over 16 years, 3 males under 16, and 4
females. In the 1800 census 1 male under 10, 2 males under 26, 1
male over 45, 2 females under 16, 1 female under 26 and 1 female
over 45.
He owned land in Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pa. which
he devised to his sons, Robert and William; other land in MERCER
CO. and in RANDOLF COUNTY, VA., which he gave to Robert and Joseph.
His will is on file in Delaware County , dated June 8, 1826. Exec.
Robert Fairlamb.
**Note: Ethel Dougherty looked for Randolf County in Va. Only one
found was Randolph Co in West Va.
Later found that what was part of Va. became W. Va..

Notes for PETER HILL, SR.:
Peter Hill, Sr. of Middletown, Pa. built what was known as "Hillside
Factory" on the Brandywine in East Bradford, later used as
a paper mill. His teams and flour were taken by the Government in
an emergency during the war and afterwards, the U.S. gave him a
tract of land in Virginia, of 5000 acres. One of my first cases
was employing Fitzhugh Lee, late a Confederate General, to obtain
possession of this land, near Clarksburg, Lee County,Virginia, in
which we were successful.
Note: p 292 Note: Peter Hill had a dam on little Crum creek, in
Ridley. At one time the four brothers Hill, Peter, George W., William
and John F. owned adjoining farms in the vicinity of the dam, which
was then, I believe, the only dam on little Crum creek.

Jonas Preston was one of the most widely known civil engineers of
his day and was regarded as a man of unusual capacity in his profession.
J. P. Fairlamb made the first surveys for the Philadelphia, Wilmington
and Baltimore Railroad Company. He also superintended the first
establishment of the waterworks in Wilmington and though many predicted
his effort would result in failure, nothing daunted, he, confident
in his own conclusion, went energetically to work and completed
the enterprise with perfect success. He was a man of most positive
convictions and could not be moved from his purpose by arguments
whose force and correctness did not commend themselves to his discernment.
He died in 1860 in full communion of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church,
lamented by his friends and respected by the entire community. (J.

Polk County, Missouri; m. ANN ELIZA REATH, 2 March 1847.
Notes for NICHOLAS IV FAIRLAMB:
Nickolas Fairlamb was born in PA Nov 4, 1817 and died in Benton
Twp,Polk Co,MO, Mar 28, 1884. Ann E. Fairlamb was also born in PA
May 4, 1825 and died in Benton Twp,Polk Co,MO, Dec 26, 1893. Both
are buried in Reynolds Chapel Cemetery, Dallas Co, MO. This cemetery
is on the Dallas County side of the Polk County line. The Fairlambs
moved to Polk Co, MO, in 1879.
I learned recently that Ann Elizabeth Faircloth's maiden name was
Reath. She married Nicholas Fairlamb about 1846/7 in Columbia, Lancaster
Co, PA. So, there does not appear to be a direct Broome-Tarbert
connection as I earlier thought.
It is possible that an aunt raised my Maria Ellen Tarbert, and,
as she became a teenager, she moved in with the Fairlambs to work.
These events would have been in Columbia, Lancaster Co, PA. My father
always said she was raised by an aunt, and I had erroneously assumed
it was the Fairlambs. With further research, I noticed on the census
listings that Nicholas and Ann Fairlamb usually had a young girl
or two in their household -- probably to assist with the tailor
occupation that Nicholas pursued.
Regards, Hollis

4/15/1829-Obituary-Village Record
"Dr. George A. Fairlamb died, at Downingtown, on Friday morning
last. He was senior editor of the Independent Journal aged 43 years.
He was a man of education and talents. How highly he was esteemed
in his profession as a Physician, was attested by an extensive practice,
while health permitted him to devote his attention exclusively to
it. To a remarkably fine person, he united the polished manners
of an accomplished Gentleman. Frank, courteous and benevolent, his
friends were warmly attached to him Personal enemies we presume
he had none; and political jealousies and rivalries cease in generous
breasts with the first pang of sickness. It would seem had looked
calm to the dread event which it is our duty to announce; for two
years ago he wrote a letter addressed to two friends giving directions
in respect to his interment, on the occasion of his death".

Democratic Watchman, October 16, 1908, page 4, obituary
"Dr. George Ashbridge Fairlamb, one of the best known residents
as well as prominent physicians of Bellefonte, died at his rooms
in the Bush house at one o'clock Monday morning. For years he had
been a great sufferer with rheumatic gout as a result of wounds
received and privations sustained during his service in the Civil
war. In recent years other complications set in so that his life
for a long time had been practically that of a confirmed invalid,
and his death the natural result of the continual physical drain
and bodily suffering; congestion of the brain being the direct cause.
Deceased was a son of Dr. and Mrs. George A. Fairlamb and was born
in Chester county June 24th 1826, so that at the time of his death
he was 82 years, 3 months and 18 days old. His lineal descent can
be traced back to Nicholas Fairlamb, of Durham, England, who brought
to the Society of Friends at Philadelphia a certificate of membership
from the Durham Monthly Meeting dated June 13th. 1700.
His father dying the subject of this sketch came to Bellefonte
when he was ten years old and was taken to raise and educate by
Bond Valentine. He was sent to the Bellefonte Academy, then the
leading educational institution of the town, and while yet early
in his teens went to clerking in the drug store of Dr. John Harris
where he remained until he sold out to Joseph Harris when he clerked
for him until he entered the University of Pennsylvania to study
medicine. He graduated from that institution in 1848 and returning
to Bellefonte at once entered upon the practice of medicine. Several
years later he and Dr. James H. Dobbins formed a co partnership
and practiced together until the breaking out of the Civil war.
At the breaking out of the war he raised Company H, 148th regiment
Pennsylvania volunteers, and went to the front as its captain. Later
he was promoted to the rank of major and after the battle of the
Wilderness to a lieutenant-colonel. He was wounded at the battle
of Chancellorsville and twice at the battle of Spottsylvania, in
the charge made early in the morning by the Second corps, his right
elbow being shattered, necessitating a resetting of the joint. In
the spring of 1864 he was captured by the Confederates and sent
to Libby prison where he suffered all the horrors and privations
of that infamous place. He was paroled September 12th, 1864 at Annapolis,
Md., and on February 24th, 1866, he was discharged on a surgeon's
certificate of disability from wounds.
Shortly after the close of the war he was appointed examining physician
at the Lazaretto quarantine station below Philadelphia, where he
remained two years. He then returned to Bellefonte and resumed the
practice of medicine but gave it up after a few years and has since
lived a retired life. Dr. Fairlamb was perhaps one of the best known
men as well a. unique and pleasing character in Bellefonte. Coming
to Bellefonte as he did almost three quarters of a century ago he
had a personal knowledge of much of the history of the town; and
being possessed of a very retentive memory and being a good raconteur,
his stories and reminiscences of Bellefonte and its people were
more interesting than any history ever written. He was staunch in
his friendships and always willing to help those in need to the
best of his ability.
Of his immediate family only one sister, Miss Deborah Fairlamb,
of Chester county, survives. He leaves a number of nephews and nieces,
one of the former being Dr. George F. Harris. of this place, whose
mother was Dr. Fairlamb's sister.
He was a member of Gregg Post No. 95, G. A. R., and also of the
Loyal Legion. He was a member of the Society of Friends and his
funeral was held at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon from the
residence of Dr. George F. Harris, interment being made in the Friends
burying ground."
